Through the sacraments of Christian Initiation, man receives the new life of Christ. Now we carry this life "in earthen vessels," and it remains "hidden with Christ in God." We are still in our "earthly tent," subject to suffering, illness, and death. This new life as a child of God can be weakened and even lost by sin.
The Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls and bodies, who forgave the sins of the paralytic and restored him to bodily health, has willed that his Church continue, in the power of the Holy Spirit, his work of healing and salvation, even among her own members. This is the purpose of the two sacraments of healing: the sacrament of Penance and the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.
Those who approach the sacrament of Reconciliation obtain pardon from God's mercy for the offenses committed against him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conversion.
Hours for Confessions: Saturday 3:30 - 5 & 8 - 9 PM (Spanish is available from 8-9 PM only)
This sacrament can also be received privately by calling for an appointment with one of the parish priests. The parish offers communal reconciliation ceremonies twice a year, (Advent and Lent), with the opportunity for private confession. Preparation for the confession
If a member of your family is seriously ill, please call the parish office (937-4555). One of the priests will come to your home or the hospital to anoint the sick and pray with him/her.
The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, should be celebrated at the beginning of a serious illness, either terminal or not. The reception of the Eucharist, within or outside Mass, as Viaticum, food for the passage through death to eternal life, is the last sacrament proper to the dying Christian. Depending on the circumstances, every effort should be made to involve the family and friends of the dying in the liturgical celebration.
Our church provides a rich selection of prayers of commendation for the moment of death. For exceptional circumstances, in sudden and immediate danger of death or when the person is already dead, the priest or deacon can be called for appropriate rites or prayers.
"I am going to prepare a place for you, I shall come back and take you with me." (John 14:3)

The Catholic Church offers distinct occasions for common prayer at the time of funerals:
By family preference, any single rite may be used as the sole funeral rite.
All of the rites presume the active participation of the parish community as well as the family. Appropriate music, songs and church symbols are strongly recommended. Music is available on short notice.
The Church allows cremation but prefers the coffin be in the church for the funeral Mass or service. The ashes must be properly buried or placed in a crematorium.. See a priest or deacon.
New Horizons Support Group ministers to divorced, separated and widowed individuals. It is our goal to meet the spiritual, social and moral support needs of our Christian brothers and sisters. We support the members through the healing process with the anticipation of beginning. We help our members get in touch with the loving Father after suffering the loss of a mate. We seek to integrate our members with the rest of the parish community so we may all become one family in Christ. The faith expression and doctrine is Roman Catholic. Contact Jerry Kipper
Catholic Charities is now offering affordable counseling for individual, family or child development issues. Fees will be based on ability to pay. Call Dr. Robert Dougherty, PHD, Monday through Friday, at the Catholic Clinical Services office, 1105 E. Foster, (805) 348-1627.
The goal in the ministry of detention is primarily to communicate the good news of God's unconditional love to youth in trouble . Because of their present environment and related emotional and psychological pressures, it is essential that youth in detention experience support and understanding of their struggle through the Church community. Our affirmation of their person, not necessarily their behavior, will invite them to grow toward a more positive self-awareness and acceptance of their person and potential. The Christian community must be their lived experience of the unconditional love of God. Our ministry in detention seeks to reflect a loving God and to enable the youth to experience the presence of God in their lives. Contact: Irma Gapter
When a parishioner is ready to seek healing from the pain of the deliberate loss of an unborn baby, whether their own or a family member, this ministry is trained to guide the person toward healing and forgiveness from God. Please contact the rectory for assistance - 937-4555.
